Week 3 Question 3: Facebook Users are Narcissistic/Low Self-Esteem

This article had results on a study of a group of college students' Facebook usage. The goal was to determine what type of people use Facebook. They claimed that the majority of Facebook users who update constantly are narcissistic and attention-seekers. While others who check Facebook frequently suffer from low self-esteem. Also they noted that women post profile pictures to show off, while men update their statuses to show off.

I agree with some things but disagree with others. For example, even though a lot of people post things that seem narcissistic, I don't think they really are that way. Many people will post things that don't pertain to themselves, or just to get attention. I do agree that people who post multiple pictures a day requesting for comments, have low self-esteem. As far as men and women differing in showing off, i disagree. I have found that both women and men who show off, do it through their photos and status updates. I haven't found a difference between the two.

But these are just my opinions and views, I am interested in seeing others' thoughts on the article.

  1. This strange obsession with Facebook is something I continue to ponder over. I don’t get it. Absolutely, I agree with the low self esteem and narcissistic behavior.
I think it all boils down to whether or not someone has enough to do in their life. If a person is busy with work, school, kids, or the like then they are going to have time to post those silly things on their Facebook page. If they are busy and still do it then they really have a serious need for attention.
In the end we all have our eccentricities, myself included. I think it has a lot to do with the state of the world today, especially in America where many people are exhibitionists.

  2. First off, this is an interesting article and it proposes some bold conclusions.
The study however was quite small and would have to be much larger to grasp a complete understanding on whether narcissists update frequently. I actually think it makes sense though. The article just stated people are 'more likely' to be narcissistic not that everyone who updates every hour is a narcissist (that's reserved for people on twitter). I have friends who's sole purpose on Facebook is to show off what they look like/do at parties. Not to say that one can't partake in that and not be narcissistic but I believe the odds are increased. I can also agree with the low self-esteem issue as well. I assume if one has low self-esteem they'll be more interested in other peoples lives and not their own so it makes sense.

  3. I read this article too. I totally agree with you about agreeing and disagreeing on the major ideas and points that this article made. I think some people that post and update their statuses religiously are narcissistic but on the other hand some aren't. Maybe some are just addicted to facebook, yes it happens, and maybe some people are just in the habit of always being connected through facebook and like to update their status but saying that they are all narcissistic I would have to disagree. That is such a universal statement being made and I just don't see how it can be true.
