Week 9 Question 3: Facebook Sues Spammers

For this weeks media article of choice, I chose to use the AllFacebook website. I have never used this one in the past so I thought I would try it out and find something relevant to the things we learn and/or discuss in this class. Since we just completed our group of journals I decided I would look at Facebook this week to add on to the things we may not have already talked about regarding Facebook.

I then stumbled upon an article entitled Facebook Sues Spammers. I am glad to have read this article and found out the facts about spam on this website because I thought that this was something that the producers of Facebook allowed/were responsible for. But after reading this article I saw that Facebook is suing users who are putting false ads on Facebook that are spamming people into thinking they can attain something that they really cannot.

I also read that Facebook is in the Guinness Book of World Records for it's spam-fighting efforts. So after reading this I am glad to know that Facebook is fighting to stop these ads from appearing on our pages because they are annoying and fraudulent.

  1. I think this is a good step for Facebook. It is nice to know that they are working on the Spammers, because there is nothing quite annoying as false advertisements and promotions. Facebook fighting back spammers is also helping the virus game, because maybe now less virus will be spread to users.

I think it’s funny how they are in the Guinness Book of World Records for fighting back Spam. That’s not really what I would think would be world records worthy, but I guess it is an accomplishment, since spams are continuously taking over websites. So Facebook, “A” for effort!

  2. THANK GOD. I really hate hate hate the spamming. It makes me not want to go on Facebook sometimes (even though I know this will not happen AHAHA). Facebook fighting back is a great step, hopefully they'll help with virus fighting, making it harder for virus' to spread through Facebook.

What category does that even fall under? I did not know Guinness Book of World Records HAD categories like that! How weird! Well, I guess that's good if they are in it. It shows that they really do care about their uses and what can affect their experience of using Facebook.

  3. HEY COME CHECK OUT THIS NEW WEBSITE FOR FREE SAMPLES! Haha Just messing around...But nice post Goldie. I know Facebook has been in the spotlight for not so great reasons lately, but it is good to know that they are actually headed in the right direction with this one. I don't know how many other companies are actually working hard on this issue but they should follow Facebook's lead. And they are in the Guiness?! That was a cool fun fact to know. I mean how can you compete with that- My company is in the Guiness World Book of Records. I would definitely put that on my resume if I could...someday. Okay I can imagine, but good job Goldie!

  4. I also am glad to hear that FB is fighting back. I don’t think that they have any overwhelming desire to be good Samaritans. It’s just that they are trying to protect their business. It’s also a PR issue because they’ve been getting beat up badly by the media. They also have a financial desire to reign in the spammers because they lose money if someone clicks on a spam add as opposed to one of their ads. FB charges arms and legs for their click ads. For example, the average Google Adwords ad cost 50 cents per click, and FB charges almost $2 per click. In short, with 500,000,000 users, FB is one of the world’s most profitable businesses.
