Week 10 Question 3: Is Facebook Unveiling a Mobile Platform Next Week?

I chose to use All Facebook and review/discuss an article entitled, “Is Facebook Unveiling A Mobile Platform Next Week?” This article discusses the infamous topic of Facebook. Apparently Facebook has sent out an event invite to the press notifying them of a mobile event taking place next week. People are speculating that there is going to be a new "Facebook phone" solely dedicated to enhance the way Facebook is used and viewed on the device. It's kind of crazy to think that a phone is going to served and dedicated to Facebook alone in my opinion.

The news is streaming and surfacing face to speculators. It's believed to be the Android phone, or one similar to it, that will have the luxury of becoming the new "Facebook phone". It's quickly becoming a huge deal in the press, but why wouldn't it be? It's Facebook after all! When I really stop and think about it, it's really not that important, but society today has become so overwhelmed and indulged in social networks that it's the talk of the town.

  1. So Facebook is coming out with it's own phone. Even for an avid Facebook user I have to wonder, is this really necessary? I love Facebook, don't get me wrong. But really, my iPhone works just fine for the application and I can't imagine going out and buying a whole new phone dedicated to the use of Facebook. This whole article leaves me wondering who is going to do this? And why? Personally I think it's part of an economic push by Facebook to get the market edge over mySpace and corner the market once and for all.

  2. Does someone really need a phone JUST for facebook? I know I use facebook a lot from my phone, but I cannot imagine having a phone for that only. My droid is has a facebook app, what more does someone need? This makes me wonder who thought up this idea and if they really thought it out. I feel like this might take off, then people will get over it and move on to get another phone. I think it’s a totally silly idea, because like I said anyone with a smart phone HAS the net or a facebook app they can look at and use.

  3. The latest rumor I heard on this subject was that Facebook will likely unveil an Android powered phone that happens to have a Facebook-centric user interface. So essentially it would just be a skin for Android. I think the article I saw mentioned that they're having a mobile themed event next week at their Palo Alto headquarters. I think it's nice that Facebook is attempting to moving into other areas for revenue besides selling people's information to advertisers. Hopefully by making this shift Facebook will be less eager to sell out their users for advertisers.
